My temporary blanket

object, lace napkins, thread, 140 x 220 cm, 2024

The constant search for an answer to the question “Where is my home?” has turned into a quilt sewn from 76 lace napkins, traditionally used to decorate homes and mostly handmade by grandmothers. The artist collected these napkins in Germany, recalling a similar one at home in Nova Kakhovka, also made by her grandmother. This quilt is yet another reminder of the times when the family would gather, and a festive lace napkin would lie on the table. It does not provide warmth, just as the sense of home cannot be restored by recreating familiar images. It is an imitation that only outlines absence. At the same time, it is an attempt to hold together what is falling apart, to capture the temporary, and to feel the connection between scattered fragments.

The object was presented at the exhibitions “Secondary Archive: Women Artists in War”, Galeria Labirynt, Lublin, Poland, “Pool!it”, UK14, Kassel Museum Night, Kassel, Germany, “Transitus”, Hallenbad ost, Kassel, Germany
